Berserk: The Golden Age Arc Memorial Edition Episode 2 Recap
The impregnable Black Ram Iron Lance Heavy Cavalry is proving to be a force to be reckoned with in the war between the Midlands and the Tudors. However, before the cavalry can claim the head of the King of Midland, Guts emerges from the field and kills the leader, General Guillen, in a single strike. The Band of the Hawk appears suddenly and without warning, with Griffith leading them into the battlefield to join Guts and assist him in besting their opponents. As it turns out, Midland hired the Band of the Hawk to fight on their behalf against Tudor. While some praised the mercenary group, others despised and mocked them for it. Guts’ lone charge against the enemy was celebrated by the mercenary group back at base camp. Guts has been one of the captains of the Band of the Hawk for the last three years, as per Griffith’s orders. This explains why the other members of the group admire his swordplay and bravery. Meanwhile, Casca chastises Guts for actions that could have put his colleagues in danger. She believes Guts hasn’t changed since joining the posse because he doesn’t care about his colleagues based on his selfish and egoistic actions on the battlefield. This enraged Guts, who declared that he cares about them and had, in fact, changed. Suddenly, Griffith steps in before Casca and Guts can continue their heated conversation. Before leaving, Casca remarks that Griffith is being too gentle with Guts. Griffith approaches Guts and begins reminiscing about the last three years. Surprisingly, Guts apologized for his earlier behavior, to which Griffith responded that he was fighting for his cause because he was his. On the other hand, a group of nobles is discussing Griffith’s promotion to the Midland imperial army. They believe Griffith’s Band of the Hawk should not be treated or valued because they are just bandits when there is no war involved. To the chagrin of the nobles, the king appointed Griffith’s mercenary group as the permanent vanguard, replacing Count Julius’ White Knights. The king has been so fond of the Band of the Hawk that it will be tricky if Tudor’s army decides to hire them instead. The Band of the Hawk returns to the battlefield, where Guts battles the legendary mercenary Nosferatu Zodd. According to legend, Nosferatu Zodd has been fighting and building a reputation for himself for over 200 years, earning him the moniker ‘Zodd the Immortal.’ When Guts cuts deep into Nosferatu Zodd’s shoulders, the latter transforms into a massive monster that resembles a minotaur. Guts is the only person who has managed to cut deep into Nosferatu’s flesh for so long, making him a worthy opponent in his true form. Due to its monstrous appearance, Guts was unable to confront Nosferatu. He could only avoid his attacks, which made it very difficult for him. Luckily, Griffith arrived to assist Guts in surviving Nosferatu’s attacks. Still, Griffith could only do so little to help Guts flee from Nosferatu Zodd’s rampage. Before they could escape Nosferatu’s clutches, the monster caught Griffith’s body, hitting him against the pillars and knocking him out. Before the episode ends, Nosferatu notices Griffith’s unusual necklace, which he refers to as the Egg of the King, the Crimson Behelit. Nosferatu unexpectedly withdraws from the battlefield, warning Guts about his friendship with Griffith. Nosferatu also says that if Griffith’s ambition fails, death will surely come to Guts, and he will never be able to escape it. Casca, on the other hand, blames Guts for what happened to Griffith.
