Is The Devil is a Part-Timer Based on a Manga or Light Novel?

The Devil is a Part-Timer, known in Japanese as Hataraku Mao-sama! began as a series of light novels, written by Satoshi Wagahara and illustrated by Oniku. From there came a shonen manga, written once again by Satoshi Wagahara and illustrated by Akio Hiiragi that first began serialization in 2012 - just a year before the anime’s first season.  The story follows the demon Lord Satan who is stranded in modern-day Tokyo, after a humiliating defeat by the hero Emilia. Having next to no magic and no knowledge of the modern world, Satan, now known as Sadao Mao, starts a part-time job in a fast-food chain. But what will happen when Mao finds out that Emilia - now known as Emi - is also now living on earth as a human?

Is The Devil is a Part-Timer Finished or Ongoing?

As of July 2022, The Devil Is a Part-Timer manga is an ongoing work. While the light novel ended back in 2020, the manga hasn’t completed its story yet. As such, it is unclear whether the new The Devil Is a Part-Timer Season 2 will faithfully follow the ending of the light novel series, leave things open-ended to allow for a Season 3 or give its own ending.  The completed light novel counts 27 volumes, while the ongoing manga has 19 volumes.
