Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter after the panel, director James Gunn gave us some hints on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in which he teased that the upcoming film is not just going to be “more emotional,” but it will also be longer than the previous two films.
“This is a much bigger movie than the other two movies, and it’s a much more emotional movie than the other two movies,” Gunn said. “And it’s a longer movie than the other two movies — it’s bigger in every way.”
It is interesting to hear that the third film is going to be longer than the previous two. The first Guardians of the Galaxy film had a runtime of 2 hours and 2 minutes while the second film had a runtime of 2 hours and 17 minutes. An early guess for the runtime of the third film is that it could be closer to 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Considering that they are labeling it as the final film of the current team, it is understandable and perhaps not surprising to learn that the upcoming third film is going to be longer to give themselves time to wrap the story and also set up the future of the team.
At the end of the day, the runtime doesn’t really matter since it will all depend on the right pacing of the story that they are telling. All we know for now is that it’s going to be epic as described by the audience who saw the exclusive footage at San Diego Comic-Con.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is slated for release in theaters on May 5, 2023.
