Hawkeye was the first Christmas-themed Marvel story since Iron Man 3 before the release of the Guardians’ holiday special this year. Iron Man 3 was the first MCU story to take place during the holiday season. But Hawkeye claimed the title when it premiered on November 24, 2021, and follows Hawkeye/Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), who teams up with a new hero, Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), as they solve a criminal conspiracy with only days until Christmas.
In last year’s interview with Insider, Hawkeye’s head writer Jonathan Igla demanded that the show deserves to be watched every Yuletide season, saying that it should progress to being a Christmas classic from that day on.
“I hope that in the same way that classic Christmas movies begged to be watched every year that people will want to watch ‘Hawkeye’ every year. You know, I love me some classic Christmas movies. I love me some Hallmark Christmas movies.” argued the head writer.
Igla added, “When [I’m] really wanting to take a break and relax and feel some warm and cozy, that’s a place that I go to. And I think ‘Hawkeye’ is not exactly that, but it brings some warm and cozy with all of the car chases and the bow and arrow fights and all the excitement.”
The head writer noted that the Christmas theme was chosen carefully because it fit Hawkeye’s character as a family man. Despite his duty to uphold his responsibilities as a superhero, Clint’s duty to his family is something he strives to sustain as well, and the series shows exactly that.
“Some of it was definitely just about centering the story around [Hawkeye’s] desire to be with his family and I think that everybody can identify with at least one side of that equation. Either being somebody who, because of work you might not be able to spend the holidays with their family or as a family member hoping that a parent or a sibling or somebody is going to be able to make it home for the holidays.” he reasoned.
