Netflix Anime Adaptations

Netflix is no stranger to live-action adaptations of popular anime titles, though its success has been limited. Over the years, Netflix has adapted shows such as Death Note into a live-action movie starring Willem Dafoe as Ryuk. Last year, Netflix also released the Cowboy Bebop live-action series starring John Cho as Spike Spiegel. The series received mixed reviews though, and it ended up being canceled just over two weeks following its release. Just a few days ago, Netflix confirmed that it is working on a live-action My Hero Academia movie that will be helmed by director Shinsuke Sato of Alice in Borderland fame and written by Obi-Wan Kenobi writer Joby Harold. Another anticipated live-action project from Netflix is One Piece, the upcoming TV series that’s produced by Tomorrow Studios – the same company behind the Cowboy Bebop series. While filming for the series has wrapped up, post-production is expected to take a while. Most of Netflix’s live-action anime adaptations are western productions, though there are some exceptions. The Yu Yu Hakusho Netflix series is being made in Japan, and the upcoming City Hunter film will also be a Japanese production. City Hunter Live-Action Release Date

City Hunter is one of the most iconic anime/manga titles of the 80s, and the series has spawned multiple anime adaptations, as well as several live-action films and TV shows. For Netflix’s adaptation, Ryohei Suzuki stars as the iconic sweeper, with director Yuichi Sato onboard to direct. Meanwhile, writing duties are handled by Tatsuro Mishima who also wrote episodes for Netflix’s Yu Yu Hakusho. Alongside the announcement, Netflix released the first look at Suzuki as Ryo Saeba in the film’s first teaser visual. While there’s not a lot of info yet about the movie, it seems that it will be faithful to the source material, at least in terms of costumes and visuals. This is unlike other City Hunter adaptations which are grittier takes on the 80s story. The City Hunter live-action film is set to release on Netflix sometime in 2024. Given that the film is still in its early stages, it’s likely that we’ll have to wait a bit longer before we get a new trailer.
