Recently, Febri.jp released an interview with director Taniguchi regarding the latest One Piece movie. There, Taniguchi shared some interesting insight into the film’s creation. Specifically, Taniguchi was asked about his goal for the movie, and he explained how he wanted to “destroy” the conventions of the series and add new things to create something special. Taniguchi further mentioned how he thought that the One Piece TV anime has been going on for too long now given it has over 1,000 episodes. That’s not to say that he thinks the show should end, it’s just that the series’ length means that certain rules or practices have become the norm in terms of production. While he didn’t dive into further details regarding these rules, Taniguchi said that he wanted to bring something new to the table which he was able to do given that he’s not exactly involved with the One Piece anime. In fact, he’s been asked three times already to direct a movie for the franchise, and it is only now that he has done so. One of the key things that Taniguchi added is music. While the TV anime had iconic songs, One Piece Red goes beyond as its main character is a singer who is voiced by popular Japanese artist Ado. For the film, Ado performed seven songs, making the movie feel like a live concert. These songs weren’t included just to make the movie unique though. The film’s story was also crafted to match the songs. Plus, series creator Eiichiro Oda is a music lover according to Taniguchi, making the music-driven film a natural fit for the franchise. In case you’re unfamiliar, Goro Taniguchi is a renowned director who has directed a wide range of anime, including Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, Infinite Ryvius, and s.CRY.ed. One Piece Film: Red is director Taniguchi’s latest film, and it was released in Japan on August 6, 2022. Shortly after its release, the film became the highest-earning movie in the franchise’s history. The movie follows Luffy and the Straw Hat crew as they attend the concert of Uta, the world’s most popular singer. But it is soon revealed that Uta is the daughter of legendary pirate Shanks. One Piece Film: Red is set to release in Fall 2022 in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Ireland, and more.
