On April 23, 2021, Netflix released its new fantasy series, Shadow and Bone, which was adapted from Leigh Bardugo’s trilogy of the same title and her Six of Crows duology. Shadow and Bone follows the story of Alina Starkoov (played by Jessie Mei Li), a cartographer who finds out that she has sun-summoning powers. This gift makes her a member of a magical community of people called the Grisha.

Alina’s powers can obliterate the Shadow Fold, a malevolent force filled with monsters called volcra that divides her country in half. General Aleksander Kirigan (Ben Barnes), the leader of the Second Army, is interested in Alina’s powers. Fans are loving how the fantasy books were adapted to a Netflix series created by Eric Heisserer and 21 Lapse Entertainment, and now, they want to know if the streaming giant is planning to produce a second season. Here’s everything you need to know about Shadow and Bone Season 2, including release date, new cast members, plot, and more.

Shadow and Bone Season 2 Release Date: When will it premiere on Netflix?

As expected, Netflix already renewed Shadow and Bone for a second season back in June 2021, and the streaming giant has already confirmed during their Tudum 2022 event that Season 2 will be released in 2023. Filming already wrapped for Season 2. Executive producer Josh Barry shared a post on Instagram about going to Bulgaria, where the show films. In January 2022, it was confirmed that Shadow and Bone started filming its second season. The update comes from actor David Wurawa, who plays the character Edyck on the Netflix fantasy series, and he shared the news on his Instagram stories, announcing that shooting had officially started.

What would Shadow and Bone Season 2 be about?

There’s a lot of plot developments that would occur in the second season, but one major story element is that General Kirigan doesn’t die, and he becomes more powerful. It’s likely that Kirigan will still be the primary antagonist in Season 2.

The official description for Siege and Storm, the second book in the Shadow and Bone trilogy reads: “To save her country, Alina will have to choose between her power and the love she thought would always be her shelter. No victory can come without sacrifice–and only she can face the oncoming storm.”

Who’s the cast of Shadow and Bone Season 2?

Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed Season 2 for Shadow and Bone yet, so no cast members have been confirmed to return but it’s likely that Jessie Mei Li and Ben Barnes will return to reprise their roles if the show is renewed. It’s likely that the majority of the cast from Season 1 will return, but don’t expect actors whose characters have died to return in the second season. In January 2022, Netflix announced the 3 new cast members joining Shadow and Bone for Season 2.

Patrick Gibson (The OA) will play Nikolai Lanstov, the son of Ravkan king Alexander III with his own private fleet; Lewis Tan (Mortal Kombat) will play Tolya Yul-Bataar, Tamar’s twin brother and another Heartrender. The Witcher’s Jack Wolfe joins Shadow and Bone as Wylan Hendrik — also known as Wylan Van Eck — a member of the Six of Crows who uses his mother’s maiden name while hiding out in the Barrel; and Anna Leong Brophy (Ragdoll, Traces) as Tamar Kir-Bataar, a Heartrender and Aline’s close friend.

Is there already a trailer for Shadow and Bone Season 2?

In late September 2022, Netflix dropped a new Shadow and Bone Season 2 teaser at their Tudum 2022 virtual event. The 41-second teaser debuts two fan-favorite characters: Rakvan prince Nikolai Lanstov (played by The OA’s Patrick Gibson) and Wylan (Jack Wolfe), the sixth member of the Six of Crows, though canonically in the timeline he hasn’t met the others yet.
