Showrunners Eric Heisserer and Daegan Fryklind recently revealed to Entertainment Weekly that season 2 will adapt the remaining books in the Shadow & Bone trilogy, Siege & Storm and Ruin & Rise, while also shying away from the novels’ narrative and feature elements of later novels. “Multiple books for sure,” Heisserer said in the interview.
He continued, “We touch on a few others in Leigh’s catalog. There’s a piece that’s integral to the story that was Daegan’s idea that I’m particularly excited about. I don’t think the fans are gonna see that one coming ‘cause it’s a pretty deep cut.”
According to Fryklind, the book author Leigh would be surprised of what they have in store for the series, noting,”I don’t even think that Leigh saw it coming.” Heissar added a comment that they have bigger plans for the adaptation, “We aren’t actually using the plot of Six of Crows in season 2. That is a beefy and robust story that requires its own lane. We have a bigger ambition for it.”
Shadow & Bone follows the orphaned Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) as she learns that she is not only a magic user known as a Grisha but a powerful and rare type known as a Sun Summoner. With her potential to be powerful, she catches the attention of cunning Grisha General Kirigan (Ben Barnes), making Alina have a hard time fulfilling her purpose.
With the second season premiering in March, it is the perfect opportunity to advance the stories of characters that were left in uncertain positions at the end of Season 1. Alina and Mal were last seen on the run after faking Alina’s death. They hope to use their anonymity to quietly make Alina powerful enough to finally tear down the fold created by the Darkling. However, Fryklind reveals that she’s nervous for Alina and Mal in season 2.

“They’re certainly not in the same place as they were in season 1,” stated Heisserer. “They’ve made some pretty big decisions together that they soon discover means they’re all or nothing, and that puts a lot of stress on each other. I, too, am worried for them.”
Despite the unforeseen events that will soon take place in the fictional country of Ravka, it is expected to continue gathering the support of the dedicated fans who have welcomed the first product of season one.
