The upcoming anime’s episode count was revealed in a recent live broadcast featuring three members of the voice cast. Info about the announcement was also shared via the show’s official Twitter account. Joining the event are Asami Seto (Alpha), Seiichiro Yamashita (Cid), and Hisako Kanemoto (Epsilon).
During the event, it was confirmed that the upcoming anime adaptation will feature 20 episodes. This is an unusual number given that most anime that run for more than one cour usually get 24 episodes as a minimum. In case you’re unfamiliar, The Eminence in Shadow is an upcoming isekai anime series by Nexus that is based on the light novel series of the same name by Daisuke Aizawa. The novel series began with the first volume which was released in November 2018 in Japan. The series follows a boy whose goal is to become a shadowbroker in the modern world. Though this dream ends when he gets hit by a truck. As an isekai series, the protagonist is reincarnated as Cid Kagenou in a fantasy world. As he tries to figure out this new world that he found himself in, he comes across an elven girl whom he cures of a mysterious disease. Instead of revealing his identity to the girl, Cid states that he belongs to Shadow Garden, an organization that opposes the Cult of Diabolos. This cult is the secret ruler of the world, as he claims. While this is a made-up story, it turns out that this fantasy world is indeed controlled in secret by the Cult of Diabolos. Soon, he finds himself on a journey to fight the cult under an alias, Shadow.
Typically, a cour or an anime season consists of 11 to 13 episodes. This means a 2-cour anime has around 22 to 26 episodes on average. This makes The Eminence in Shadow unique given its unusual 20-episode count. Though fans have noted on Reddit that they are happy with this decision as this likely means each light novel volume will be covered by five episodes. Currently, the series has only four volumes, though the story has yet to conclude. The Eminence of Shadow Episode 1 will release on October 5, 2022. The series is confirmed to release with English subtitles on HIDIVE in select regions.
