According to Variety, Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s It prequel series is moving forward as the HBO Max show nabs Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane as co-showrunners. Fuchs, who previously served as producer on It: Chapter Two, had written the pilot episode with the Muschiettis. Fuchs and Kane will executive produce along with the Muschiettis and the report also reveals that Andy Muschietti is set to direct the pilot episode.
The prequel series, which is currently titled Welcome to Derry, will be set several years before the events in the first two films which starred Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise the Clown. Although the plot details have not yet been revealed, it is believed that the show will follow the origins of Pennywise, who has been stalking and killing children in Derry for hundreds of years. The first two movies are based on Stephen King’s classic horror novel that was released in 1986. The original book already confirmed that Pennywise is an ancient predatory alien that crashed into Derry on an asteroid. Although it has existed for millions of years, it was ultimately defeated by the Losers Club. For now, Welcome to Derry is still in early development. However, there is a huge chance that it will be Andy Muschietti’s next major project after The Flash. The Flash will star Ezra Miller, Ron Livingston, Michael Keaton, Kiersey Clemons, Michael Shannon, Antje Traue, Sasha Calle, and Ben Affleck. After numerous delays, the film is currently scheduled to premiere on June 23, 2023.
