According to The Guardian, Hardy secretly competed in the 2022 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Open Championship, a competition held by Ultimate Martial Arts Championships in Milton Keynes, England, last Saturday and ended up winning the gold prize in the event as he prevailed in all matches. “Everyone recognised him but he was very humble and was happy to take time out for people to take photographs with him,” the spokesperson told The Guardian. “It was a real pleasure to have him compete at our event.” The Venom actor was also praised by his opponent Danny Appleby, who was stunned upon seeing him and called him a “genuinely a really nice” guy when he showed up at the semi-finals of the tournament.

“I was shell-shocked,” Appleby said. “[Hardy] said, ‘Just forget it’s me and do what you would normally do.’” Appleby also described the actor as “a really strong guy” that “you wouldn’t think it with him being a celebrity” and claimed that he lived up to his role of Bane in The Dark Knight Rises during their match. “I’ve done about six tournaments and I’ve been on the podium in every one. But he’s probably the toughest competitor I’ve had – he certainly lived up to his Bane character, that’s for sure,” he said. Last month, Hardy also won the REORG Open Jiu-Jitsu Championship in Wolverhampton, a tournament aimed at raising funds for military personnel, veterans, and emergency service workers. He is also a trustee for REORG, a charity that teaches jiu-jitsu to those with serious injuries, or who are suffering from PTSD and depression.
