According to TheWrap, MGM has lost the film rights to the Tomb Raider franchise after the window has already passed to greenlight a sequel back in May. As a result, the long-gestating sequel is no longer happening and a bidding war has sparked among several Hollywood studios for the IP to do another new reboot.

Vikander is also no longer attached to reprise the role of Lara Croft since the new reboot is expected to have a completely new director and cast once another studio acquires the rights to the franchise after the ongoing bidding war.

It is disappointing to hear that the sequel is no longer happening considering the performance of the first film and how Vikander was eager to reprise the role of Lara Croft in the sequel. It looks like we’re going to expect yet again another reboot that will hopefully deliver a satisfying adaptation of the beloved video game.

It is interesting to see where the film rights of the Tomb Raider franchise will land and whether it will end up being a theatrical or streaming release. Considering that video game-based films and TV shows are currently trending, there is no doubt that a lot of studios are interested to be the home of one of the best-selling video games of all time.
